My name is Carol Mancuso, Executive Director of Friends of DBA. Established in 2007, our family pledged to fight a disease we could not defeat: Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA). Our son wages this battle every day.
DBA is a rare inherited bone marrow failure syndrome characterized by a failure of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. DBA affects males and females and all ethnicities equally. Most patients are diagnosed within the first year of life. However, some will be diagnosed in later childhood, adolescence, or even adulthood. Potentially, DBA patients can live long and healthy lives with appropriate medical treatment. Treatments include chronic blood transfusions, chelation therapy, and long-term corticosteroid therapy. Some DBA patients may choose to undergo a stem cell transplant (also referred to as a bone marrow transplant or cord blood transplant) to help alleviate the anemia associated with DBA.
There is currently no cure for Diamond Blackfan Anemia!
At Friends of DBA, our mission is not only to find a cure for DBA but also to strive to relieve the financial burden DBA can bring to patients and their families. Since its inception, Friends of DBA has donated a total of $935,000.00 to both Diamond Blackfan Anemia research and DBA families in financial need.
