  • Carol Mancuso

    Executive Director

    Carol and her husband, Jim, founded Friends of DBA in 2007 with the aim of raising both funds and awareness for Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA). Their inspiring journey began when their son, Trevor, was diagnosed with DBA in 1997. Motivated by their love for Trevor and their desire to find a cure, Carol and Jim dedicated themselves to supporting research efforts in the hopes of improving the lives of those affected by this rare syndrome.

    Carol's background in advertising and philanthropy has been instrumental in driving the foundation's mission forward. Her expertise and passion for fundraising enable her to generate resources that benefit not only her son but also numerous children and adults living with DBA. Over the years, Friends of DBA has successfully supported multiple research projects and provided critical financial assistance to DBA families, making a meaningful impact on the community.

    As a mother to three children and a devoted wife, Carol approaches life with a resilient and positive outlook. In the face of challenges, she embraces the belief of "playing the hand you're dealt." Her unwavering optimism and ability to see the good in all people serve as guiding principles in her dedication to making a difference.

    Carol firmly believes that a cure for DBA will be found one day. Her unwavering faith and determination fuel her continued efforts to raise awareness, funding, and support for the DBA community. Through her enduring commitment and belief in the power of collective action, Carol remains an inspiring advocate for change and a beacon of hope for those living with DBA.

  • Jim Mancuso

    Trustee

    Jim and his wife, Carol, founded Friends of DBA, establishing the organization in 2007. Their initial motivation stemmed from the realization that only limited funds were available for DBA research. Determined to make a difference, they organized a small event for friends and family to raise $3,000. To their amazement, their efforts resulted in a remarkable $13,500. This early success fueled their passion to support and fund a cure for DBA and provide assistance to families in need.

    Over the past 12 years, Friends of DBA has raised close to $750,000, a testament to Jim and Carol's unwavering commitment and dedication. With Jim's extensive background in the medical industry spanning over 33 years, he brings valuable knowledge and insights to the foundation. He recognizes that accepting and coping with DBA can be a challenging journey for many individuals and their families. Thus, he strives to leverage his expertise to support and guide those facing this difficult path.

    Jim firmly believes raising awareness about DBA is essential in garnering support and fostering the necessary fundraising efforts. By shining a spotlight on this rare and potentially fatal disease that has deeply affected his own family, he hopes to spur more incredible action and generate the necessary resources to find a cure ultimately. Jim's ongoing determination and steadfast resolve serve as a driving force for Friends of DBA, propelling them to bring about change and improve the lives of those impacted by DBA.

  • Chuck Ducey

    Vice President

    Chuck’s nephew Trevor was diagnosed with DBA in 1997. Chuck has been actively supporting the Mancuso family in their efforts to raise funds for research and offer assistance to families affected by DBA. With a background as a retired executive, Chuck contributes valuable business and financial acumen to the board. Furthermore, having served on numerous charitable boards, Chuck brings a wealth of experience to the DBA board.

  • Shawn Smith

    Media & Marketing

    Shawn recently received his Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography from Arizona State University. Shawn is currently pursuing a second bachelor's degree in media arts and science. Shawn has excellent experience as a US Army and Air Force veteran and as a flight attendant for the past 34 years. He also believes in helping those in need and giving back to the community. Shawn has a strong sense of dedication and commitment, having served on the board since 2013.

  • Sherie Skladany

    Secretary

    Sherie, a marketing communications professional and project manager, became the Secretary of the DBA board in 2010. With her background as a former PTA board member and extensive skills, she brings valuable expertise to the Friends of DBA organization. Having developed a close friendship with the Mancuso family over the years, Sherie actively volunteers alongside them to raise funds and provide support to other families affected by DBA. In her professional life, Sherie is employed in the credit division of Bridgestone. Outside work, she enjoys cooking, hiking, reading, and cherishing moments with her family.

  • Trevor Mancuso

    Graphic Designer

    Trevor, the inspiration behind establishing the Friends of DBA foundation, has faced numerous challenges while growing up with DBA. However, these obstacles never deterred him from pursuing his passion for creativity. Trevor's determination led him to earn a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Marketing from the University of Cincinnati. Currently, he works as a graphic designer at Horizons Incorporated. Trevor has always played a role within the foundation, contributing his artistic talents by creating paintings for silent auctions and designing table centerpieces. Recently, he has taken on an official position as a DBA board member, specializing in web and print design. During his leisure time, Trevor hones his fine art skills in drawing and painting, constantly striving for improvement. Additionally, he nurtures his love for collecting vinyl records, expanding his knowledge and appreciation for this art form.

    Holly Rafie

    Trustee

    Holly has been a dedicated member of the DBA board since 2020. Her connection to the cause stems from her longstanding relationship with the Mancuso family, beginning before their son Trevor was born. Holly has closely followed Trevor's journey with DBA and has supported the foundation since its establishment. Witnessing the tremendous impact and positive influence, the organization makes on people's lives; Holly felt compelled to take on a more active role as a board member. The opportunity to read and assess grant applications fills her with a sense of fulfillment as she realizes the real and tangible difference that can be made through the foundation's actions. The vision and determination demonstrated by Carol and Jim, the organization's founders, serve as a personal inspiration for Holly. She feels fortunate and privileged to be part of such a compassionate and impactful organization.

  • Robin Serwatka

    Trustee

    Robin resides in Cleveland with her husband and two children, working as a benefits advisor in the area. She is well-versed in assisting others and has a strong passion for making a positive impact, which is why she feels privileged to be part of Friends of DBA. Robin finds great joy in her role on the board, particularly in the opportunity to exercise her creativity in fundraising and event planning. She firmly believes that every individual and encounter brings a chance to learn something new as long as one remains open and receptive to listening. Robin's dedication to helping others shines through in her commitment to the organization.

  • Jalyn Mancuso

    Trustee

    Jalyn Mancuso is a passionate individual who has always been intensely interested in actively participating with Friends of DBA. Over the past four years, she has deepened her involvement with the organization, now serving as their social media assistant. Jalyn thoroughly enjoys connecting with DBA families and engaging with their unique stories. Beyond her dedication to Friends of DBA, she also leads a fulfilling career as a dance instructor. Teaching various dance styles to children of all ages, Jalyn finds immense delight in sharing her passion with her students and witnessing their personal growth. Her commitment to Friends of DBA and dance instruction is driven by her love for working with children and the honor she feels in positively impacting their lives.

    Dominic is a dedicated student at High Point University, actively participating in various extracurricular activities. Holding the prestigious position of president within the coed service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, he embodies a true passion for serving others. Dominic's involvement with Friends of DBA spans most of his life, and his personal experiences have profoundly impacted him. Witnessing the challenges faced by families affected by DBA, he felt compelled to join the board in 2021 to contribute his skills and enthusiasm. Dominic harnesses his lifelong love for helping others to benefit Friends of DBA, channeling his commitment into making a tangible difference in the lives of DBA-affected individuals and their families. He firmly believes that the foundation has the potential to provide vital assistance to those in need and is driven to direct its efforts towards fulfilling that mission.
